🌿 "Yemen Al-Khair 2" — More than a Bazaar, a Voice of Refugees and a Vision for a Better Tomorrow. 🌍

From May 30 to June 3, 2025, Tomorrow is Better Organization opened new doors of opportunity by organizing the “Yemen Al-Khair 2” Bazaar at Bilal Al-Habashi Center in Addis Ababa.

🎯 The goal was clear: to empower refugees, especially women, by linking them to the local labor market — showcasing their skills, amplifying their talents, and helping them build meaningful connections within the community.

👥 Over the course of five days, the bazaar welcomed an estimated 200 to 250 visitors. But beyond the numbers, the true impact was visible: renewed self-confidence, real networking opportunities, and a stronger sense of belonging.

💬 In an effort to amplify this impact, our organization extended formal invitations to key institutions and figures, whose presence meant the world to our participants. Honored attendees included:

Representatives from UNHCR

A delegation from the Qatar Embassy

Members of INKOMOKO

Representatives from Bab Al-Khair Organization

MP and advisor Mohamed Al-Arusi

________________________________________

🔹 What is the ICESCR?

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) is one of the core international human rights treaties adopted by the United Nations in 1966. It protects essential human rights including:

• The right to education

• The right to adequate living standards

• The right to health

• The right to social security

• Protection of the family and equal opportunity

🟢 Why is it important?

The ICESCR serves as a legal and moral framework that holds states accountable for ensuring dignity, equality, and justice for all people — including refugees. Countries that ratify the covenant are obligated to reflect its principles in their national laws, policies, and reports.

A New Step Towards Empowerment and Inclusion

We are delighted to announce that Tomorrow is Better Organization (TiB) has signed a grant agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support refugees with disabilities living in Addis Ababa through the provision of assistive devices that will enable them to live with greater independence and dignity.

Addis Ababa hosts over 79,000 refugees, and it is estimated that 10% – 15% of them are persons with disabilities. This initiative directly responds to their needs and reflects our vision of empowering the most vulnerable groups and enhancing their participation in society.

This partnership with UNHCR marks an important milestone toward building a fairer and more inclusive future, where everyone receives the support they deserve regardless of their circumstances.

At Tomorrow is Better, we believe that disability does not mean inability — rather, it is an additional motivation for us to work together to achieve empowerment and inclusion.

A Historic Partnership between Tomorrow is Better and Mercy Corps 🌍✨

Today we celebrate a new milestone in the journey of Tomorrow is Better…

We have signed a strategic partnership agreement with one of the most renowned and largest humanitarian organizations in the world, Mercy Corps 🤝

This signing did not come by chance, but rather as the outcome of a long and strong relationship filled with joint achievements that have connected our organization with Mercy Corps during the past period, through various activities and services that supported many refugees in Addis Ababa.

🚀 The Value of the Partnership

• Mercy Corps is one of the world’s leading organizations in development and humanitarian response, with a strong presence in more than 40 countries. Partnering with them reflects an advanced level of recognition of our organization’s capacity and competence.

• This partnership marks a turning point in the journey of Tomorrow is Better, opening new doors for resources, expertise, and stronger impact of programs and services delivered to refugees in Ethiopia.

• Such steps give refugees a stronger voice and greater standing; while reinforcing the respect and recognition they receive from the international community and key institutions.

🌍 Impact on Refugees

Every achievement by our organization is not measured by the size of the agreement or the partner, but by how much it transforms the lives of refugees themselves. This partnership carries wide hopes for expanding support and services, and it affirms that refugees are not just beneficiaries, but true partners in shaping a better future for themselves and their host communities.

🙌 A Word of Thanks

This achievement is first and foremost thanks to our dedicated team, who worked tirelessly and with great responsibility, proving that hard work and organized effort are the very path that makes our organization worthy of standing among leading partners.

Refugee Voices Resound in Kampala: A Defining Chapter for Ethiopia’s Refugee Community

In #Kampala, on 29–30 September 2025, the Refugee-Led Regional Roundtable became more than a meeting — it became a turning point. Under the theme “Advancing the Global Compact on Refugees at the High-Level Officials Meeting”, refugee voices from Ethiopia rose with unprecedented strength, leaving an indelible mark on regional and global discussions.

Profound Gratitude to #IndependentDiplomat Diplomat and Ms. Enguday Meskele

We extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to Independent Diplomat (ID), and especially to Ms. Enguday, whose unwavering dedication made our participation possible. Her tireless support for refugee-led organizations has not only enabled our presence at this historic roundtable but has fortified our capacity to speak, advocate, and influence at the international level.

The Unforgettable Voice of Ms. Faduma Abukar Awes

The roundtable was profoundly elevated by the powerful representation of Ms. Faduma Abukar, Tomorrow is Better’s Public Relations Officer and Spokesperson. With eloquence, courage, and clarity, she spoke on behalf of all refugee-led organizations in Ethiopia and the broader refugee community.

Her words captured the reality, the struggle, and the hope of refugees with unmatched conviction. The strength of her message drew extraordinary recognition from policymakers, organizers, and senior officials alike. For many, it was a reminder that refugees are not silent subjects of policy but architects of their own future.

A Step Toward Transformation

This was not just an event; it was a milestone in refugee leadership. It demonstrated the transformative potential of inclusion, localization, and genuine partnership. Refugees in Ethiopia, through their representatives, have shown that they are ready not only to participate but to lead in shaping solutions.

At Tomorrow is Better Organization (TiB), we stand proud of this achievement. Our gratitude to Independent Diplomat and Ms. Enguday is immeasurable, and our pride in the exceptional leadership of Ms. Faduma Abukar is boundless. Together, they ensured that in Kampala, the voice of Ethiopia’s refugees was not only heard but carried forward — strong, bold, and unforgettable.

Tomorrow is Better: Advocating for Refugees in Kampala

During today’s Refugee-Led Regional Roundtable in Kampala (October 1, 2025), Tomorrow is Better (TiB) proudly amplified the voices of the refugee community in Ethiopia.

Our delegation highlighted critical issues facing refugees in Ethiopia, including:

🔹 Freedom of movement within and outside camps.

🔹 A unified registration system accessible across the country.

🔹 Greater opportunities for education and employment, both locally and internationally.

🔹 The right to access information on registration, waiting times, and fair selection processes.

These insights will now be carried forward to Geneva this December, ensuring that the voices of refugees in Ethiopia directly inspire global commitments.

💡 We also engaged in comparative reflections: in some areas, Ethiopia provides advantages to refugees compared to other countries, while in other aspects — such as freedom of movement in Uganda and Kenya — those countries are ahead.

This exchange gave us the opportunity to learn and share lessons with others.

* For the full panel speech delivered by our Spokesperson Faduma Abukar at the Refugee-Led Regional Roundtable – Kampala, Uganda (30 Sept 2025) on behalf of all refugee-led organizations in Ethiopia,

The bazaar featured artisans, small business owners, and creative talents from Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, turning the venue into a vibrant space where diversity met unity, and where cultures, ideas, and opportunities intersected.

Mutual Empowerment and New Opportunities

What made this edition unique was the shared participation of both refugees and local entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration rather than separation.

The event aimed not only to sell handmade and cultural products but also to create new links between refugees and the local market, paving the way for business partnerships, inclusion, and stronger social ties.

Through this interaction, the bazaar helped refugees access new economic spaces and showcased their role as active contributors to the local economy.

A Space for Inclusion and Shared Growth

Through “Yemen Al-Khair 3,” Tomorrow is Better reaffirmed its commitment to economic empowerment and community cohesion, promoting a vision where refugees and locals thrive together.

The bazaar served as a living example of social inclusion in practice—where cultural exchange and entrepreneurship replace isolation and dependency, and where communities grow stronger through cooperation.

A Strong Message of Solidarity

The event was attended by representatives of international and local organizations, community leaders, artists, and hundreds of visitors from diverse backgrounds.

All agreed that “Yemen Al-Khair 3” was more than a marketplace — it was a message of unity and shared humanity, showing what is possible when people are given space to connect and create.

Closing Message

Through this initiative, Tomorrow is Better Organization demonstrated that true empowerment begins when people are linked to opportunities, markets, and community life — not only to aid.

For three days, “Yemen Al-Khair 3” became a living story of resilience, creativity, and cooperation, redefining what it means to coexist and build hope together in Addis Ababa.

Because a better tomorrow begins when we open doors — not when we draw boundaries.

Another International Milestone for Tomorrow is Better!

Tomorrow is Better Organization (TiB) proudly participated in the 85th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) held in Banjul, The Gambia, through the side event “Borderless Justice: Advancing Freedom of Movement for Forcibly Displaced Persons in the East and Horn of Africa.”

The event was organized by Independent Diplomat (ID) in collaboration with The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), ReDSS, Woord en Daad, and other regional partners.

Ms. Faduma Abukar – Official Spokesperson of Tomorrow is Better, represented the organization alongside Hon. Commissioner Salma Sassi Safer and refugee leaders from Kenya and Uganda, discussing practical solutions to enhance freedom of movement and inclusion for refugees in the region.

She highlighted administrative barriers restricting refugees’ mobility and challenges faced by Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs) in Ethiopia, emphasizing that such limitations reduce refugees’ ability to contribute economically.

She also met Commissioner Janet R. Sallah-Njie and Commissioner Salama to discuss ways to strengthen the participation of refugee women in regional decision-making platforms.

🔹 Key Messages Presented:

1️⃣ Documentation First: Every refugee must have a recognized ID ensuring access to essential services.

2️⃣ Mobility Rules that Work: Simplify travel and residence procedures for refugees to move, work, and thrive.

3️⃣ Accessible CTDs: Provide affordable, machine-readable travel documents to enhance self-reliance and dignity.

💠 Special Appreciation:

• To The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) for their strong partnership and continued support in advancing refugee-led advocacy and inclusion across the region.

This marks Tomorrow is Better’s second international representation this month, following its active participation in the Refugee-Led Regional Roundtable in Kampala, Uganda, where TiB shared key recommendations on freedom of movement, unified registration, education and employment opportunities, and transparency in information access.

These insights will now be carried forward to Geneva this December, ensuring that refugees’ voices from Ethiopia continue to shape global policy and advocacy.

Tomorrow is Better Participates in the Adama Legal Awareness Workshop: A Strategic Step Toward Coordinated Efforts and Strengthened Refugee Protection

As part of the national efforts to enhance refugee rights protection, Tomorrow is Better (TiB) received an official invitation from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to attend a legal awareness workshop scheduled to take place in Adama on December 1 and 2, organized jointly by EHRC and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), with the participation of a wide range of governmental, judicial, and security institutions.

Background and Importance of the Workshop

Findings from EHRC’s field monitoring in refugee-hosting areas — including Addis Ababa — indicate persistent gaps in refugee protection, particularly in:

• Asylum and registration procedures

• Detention related to legal status

• Access to documentation

• Access to justice

In response to these urgent challenges, a new initiative was launched to raise awareness among frontline officers — including police, immigration, prosecutors, courts, and other justice institutions — aiming to strengthen their understanding of national and international refugee protection standards.

A Broad Invitation Involving Key Protection Stakeholders

Invitations were extended to major institutions including: the Federal Police, Addis Ababa Police Commission, Sub-City Police Offices, Ministry of Justice, Federal Courts, ICS, RRS, Addis Ababa University Legal Aid Clinic, UNHCR, OHCHR, and several UN agencies and INGOs. This gathering represents one of the most inclusive meetings of the key actors influencing refugee protection in Ethiopia.

Unprecedented Collaboration and a Positive Atmosphere

The workshop was marked by exceptional cooperation, openness, and genuine willingness to engage from all participating institutions. Justice entities, police structures, immigration authorities, and UN agencies showed strong readiness to listen, discuss, and adopt practical recommendations to improve the refugee protection landscape.

This collaborative environment confirmed that joint action is the only path toward real and sustainable solutions.

Tomorrow is Better’s Role: From Advocacy to Tangible Impact

TiB’s participation was not merely ceremonial; it came as the result of long-standing efforts undertaken by the organization to bring all stakeholders together around one table in order to:

• Break down barriers between officials and refugee communities

• Harmonize visions, responsibilities, and approaches

• Build a shared decision-making platform for key institutions

• Develop realistic and systematic solutions to the legal challenges facing refugees

Since its establishment, TiB has consistently worked to create genuine spaces for dialogue, and this workshop represents a major achievement aligned with its strategic goals.

Exceptional Leadership Contribution by Ms. Ebtesam Khaled

The workshop witnessed a strong and influential presence by Ms. Ebtesam Khaled, the organization’s Chairperson, who delivered a powerful intervention that deeply resonated with all attendees.

Her message successfully:

• Highlighted the true, positive, and active role of refugees

• Countered negative narratives portraying refugees as a burden

• Emphasized that refugees are productive, capable, and valuable contributors

• Demonstrated their social and economic contributions and their ability to lead impactful initiatives when given the space and opportunity

Her intervention marked a pivotal moment in the workshop, shifting the perception of many decision-makers and reinforcing that refugee empowerment is not only a human-rights obligation but also a meaningful investment that benefits the host country.

TiB: A Trusted Partner in the Refugee Protection Ecosystem

EHRC’s invitation to Tomorrow is Better stands as a clear indication of the growing confidence in TiB’s role as a refugee-led organization capable of providing grounded insights based on direct experience and community engagement.

TiB reaffirms that this workshop is not the end of the journey, but an important step within a broader strategic direction aimed at enhancing refugee protection, fostering dialogue between authorities and communities, and driving meaningful improvements in policies and implementation.
